Mission Organization - Do's and Don'ts
  • Donating Do's and Don'ts

Almost every decluttering mission includes a trip or two to a charity to drop off unwanted items. Make the most of your donations with these tips:

    • Do make some calls to find out where your items are most needed; you'll feel better and have more incentive to purge. Check beyond widely known charities. A local church may have a family in need of furniture, a women's organization may be seeking office attire for women entering the workforce, or a nursing home may be in need of blankets.

    • Do schedule an appointment if a charity calls to say it will be in your neighborhood — even if you're not sure what you might donate. Pickup services are an ideal no-cost way to get rid of large items, such as an old sofa or dresser. Even if you donate only a few boxes of clothing, you'll have cleared some clutter.
    • Do ask for a receipt, which is needed for tax-deduction purposes. Put all charitable receipts in a folder so they're at your fingertips at tax time. Get a receipt even if you're not sure if you'll deduct the donation.
    • Don't donate items that are in poor condition. Otherwise the charity will have to waste its resources in discarding the items.
    • Don't drop off items that the charity might not accept. Find out in advance if the organization takes old computers, treadmills and other unconventional items. Also ask about clothing restrictions; some groups take only in-season clothing.
    • Don't drop off items when the charity is closed, unless a sheltered after-hours drop-off spot is clearly designated. Call in advance to find out if you need to go to a particular entrance; ask what times donations are accepted.

Locally based Ultimate Organizers, a professional organization company, has been serving the local community for the past four years.  The company is owned and operated by Debi Koulogianis, President & CEO, and her partner, Mike Thorp, Chief Marketing Officer. Debi recently gained national attention from the Cambridge Press Who’s Who as the Executive of the Year Representing Design & Organizer 2007-2008.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Debi asked her to share some of her success secrets and thoughts around organizing.

First of all, tell us a little about a professional organizer:

“Most Organizers today specialize in various areas.  For us, we focus on organizing all areas of the home, preparing homes for sale in this difficult market, down seizing, and moving into a new residence.”

“People are always asking what I do as an organizer. Our purpose is to provide our clients the opportunity to spend more time doing the things they love.   What our clients benefit from is less stress, more time, and the opportunity to focus their energy on those aspects of life that bring about happiness.”

“We are comfortable transforming living spaces, family areas, garages, work spaces, basements, attics and more.   We have also expanded our business to the business side of organizing. This includes workflow for small businesses, manuals, organizational charts and more.  Most of our time at Ultimate Organizers is spent hands on de-cluttering, setting up better systems, donating unwanted items, hauling out junk, creating new spaces to entertain in and enjoy, and more. “

Here are a few easy organization tips that were shared, that you can put into practice today to save you and your family time and relive stress.

 1. Open the mail over the garbage every day.

2. When you take something out; put it away when you are finished with it.

3. Complete each task fully before moving onto the next one.

4. Bills should be dated on the envelope when they need to be sent out and put in a drawer or desk area until checks are written; everything in due date order.

5. When in doubt throw it out.

6. Make a list when going to the grocery store and make sure you make the list on a full stomach, that way you will buy what you need!  When getting home from shopping, put everything away immediately.  You won’t end up with piles of stuff in the kitchen.

7. Before leaving the house make sure the counters and the kitchen sink is clean and clear of clutter. This will give you one less thing to do when you get home and it only takes 2 minutes.

8. Plan out meals a week in advance if you have a busy schedule.   Put on the calendar and have the family help.

9. Before going to bed at night, pick up any items lying around the house, this will make the day complete and you start fresh the next day.

10. Have a calendar handy with all schedules and appointments.  You only have one place to look and you won’t search for doctor appointment cards and pieces of paper.
